Janis is complaining that he woke her up from sleep to tell her she was talking. She thinks it’s ironic that he was talking to her, about talking, while she was trying to sleep.

Arlo, on the other hand, thinks it’s pretty ironic (and clearly pretty aggravating) that Janis is complaining about him waking her up, since clearly Janis’s talking in her sleep kept him awake all night.

The irony is that he woke her up to bug her about talking when she wasn’t saying anything important or intentionally, but he ignores her when she’s actually trying to tell him something.

I puzzled over this one, but it seems to me that the irony is that her talking usually puts Arlo to sleep, rather than waking him up.

I actually missed it completely. I assumed that he had woken her IN HIS SLEEP to tell her that she was sleep-talking. Now THAT would be ironic.

Some people believe talking in your sleep is an indication of “fitful,” non-rested, unrewarding sleep.

But, the contrary seems to be true. Janis is well-rested.

In fact, it’s Arlo who seems to be lacking in rest, based on his blank reactions, squinty eyes, and devotion to his coffee.

That’s what Janis perceives to be ironic.
