@ CIDU Bill (2) - I now remember reading the quote (long ago), but even though I had forgotten it, I think the tree joke still works without it. The cartoon sort of reminded me of Dr. Seuss’s “The Lorax”.

But see the Chicago Manual of Style for some good non-apostrophe options. (Though I have to admit my copy is a couple of editions out of date.) If you’re copy-editing for an actual printed book or document, or at any rate can really trust how your font and face choices will be rendered, you can represent symbols standing for themselves with something like italics, and then the pluralizing -s will be distinguished from the self-quoting symbol by being Roman or upright. Thus: There are two Ls in “NoeLOL”.

Some things do get the apostrophe for the plural, as in “There are two L’s in NoeLOL.”

Bill, I would have written it as NoeLOLs. Or hyphened the s.

Yes I know, less reality, which is why I refer to “LOLs.” In the case of “Noelol’s,” though, I gritten my teeth and added the apostrophe because I decided the made-up word would not scan well the proper way.
