Maybe he was tasting something, that wasn't supposed to be drunk in the first place, thus the stunned reaction of his colleagues? Maybe they are doing drug tests, but he drank the sample, thinking they are testing taste supplements? That would get an "eew" from me, for most "samples" I can think of.
